Everything About DFMD in India 2026

What Is a DFMD?

A DFMD — Door Frame Metal Detector — is a walk-through security screening device that uses electromagnetic induction to detect metallic objects on a person’s body as they pass through an arch-shaped frame. It is the standard primary security screening device at courts, hotels, government buildings, metro stations, shopping malls, schools and airports across India.

The person walks through the arch at normal speed. If any metal object is present — a weapon, a phone, a belt buckle, keys — the device sounds an audible alarm and lights up a zone indicator showing exactly where on the body the metal was detected.

DFMD Full Form

The full form of DFMD is Door Frame Metal Detector. It is also referred to by several other names in India:

  • Walk-through metal detector (WTMD)
  • Walk-through detector (WTD)
  • Security arch or security gate
  • Metal detector gate
  • Body scanner gate (informal)

All of these refer to the same device. DFMD is the standard term used in Indian courts, government tenders and security specifications. When a court or government building tender says “supply and install DFMD at entry point,” they mean a door frame metal detector arch.

DFMD Working Principle

A DFMD works on the principle of pulsed electromagnetic induction. Here is how the working principle operates step by step:

Transmitter Coil — Generating the Field

Inside one of the two pillars, a transmitter coil carries alternating current. This creates a pulsed electromagnetic field that extends across the entire arch opening — invisible, harmless and constant.

Receiver Coil — Detecting Disturbances

Inside the opposite pillar, a receiver coil monitors the electromagnetic field continuously. As long as no metal is present in the arch, the field is stable and no alarm is triggered.

Metal Object — Disrupting the Field

When a metallic object passes through the arch, it disrupts the electromagnetic field. The receiver coil detects this disruption as a change in signal strength. The control panel analyses the change — its magnitude, frequency characteristics and the zone from which it came — and determines whether it is significant enough to trigger an alarm.

Zone Localisation

Multi-zone DFMDs (18-zone, 33-zone models) divide the arch opening into horizontal bands. By analysing which receiver segments detected the strongest disruption, the control panel identifies the zone — ankle, knee, waist, chest, shoulder — where the metal was found, and lights up the corresponding LED on the zone indicator panel.

DFMD vs Baggage Scanner — Are They the Same?

No. A DFMD screens people — it detects metal on the person’s body as they walk through the arch. A baggage scanner (X-ray scanner) screens bags and parcels — it uses X-rays to image the contents of a bag on a conveyor belt. They serve complementary purposes at the same security checkpoint:

  • The person walks through the DFMD
  • Their bag goes through the X-ray baggage scanner
  • The security officer uses an HHMD if the DFMD alarms

Raise Solutions supplies all three — DFMD, HHMD and X-ray baggage scanners — as a complete security checkpoint system with single AMC contract.

DFMD Sensitivity Settings — What They Mean

All DFMD models allow the operator to adjust sensitivity. This controls how strong a metal disturbance must be to trigger an alarm. Higher sensitivity detects smaller metal objects but generates more false alarms from harmless items like belt buckles, coins and keys. Lower sensitivity reduces false alarms but may miss smaller threats.

Standard Indian security practice: Most court and government DFMD settings are calibrated to alarm on metal objects larger than a standard mobile phone — below that threshold, coins, keys and small items typically do not trigger the alarm. High-security facilities like airports and prisons use higher sensitivity settings.

Is DFMD Radiation Safe?

Yes. A DFMD uses electromagnetic induction — the same technology as an induction cooktop or a wireless charger. It uses no X-rays, no ionising radiation and no harmful emissions. There is no safety risk from walking through a DFMD for any person, including pregnant women, people with pacemakers, and people with metal implants.

However, people with pacemakers should inform security personnel before walking through a DFMD, as a precaution, since some older pacemaker models may be sensitive to strong electromagnetic fields.

DFMD Regulations in India — Where Is It Mandatory?

DFMD installation is mandatory or strongly recommended under various regulations and institutional policies in India:

  • Courts: Supreme Court, High Courts and District Courts mandate DFMD at all visitor entry points under security guidelines from the Ministry of Law and Justice and state security authorities.
  • Airports: BCAS (Bureau of Civil Aviation Security) mandates walk-through metal detectors at all passenger entry points.
  • Metro stations: Delhi Metro, Hyderabad Metro and all operational metro systems use DFMD at all station entry points.
  • Government buildings: Central and state secretariats, PSU headquarters and sensitive administrative buildings.
  • Hotels: Hotels of 3-star and above, particularly those hosting international guests, are required to implement security screening at entry points under MHA guidelines.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About DFMD

Common questions from buyers across Andhra Pradesh before purchasing a door frame metal detector.

DFMD full form is Door Frame Metal Detector. It is the standard term used in Indian courts, government tenders and security specifications for the walk-through metal detector arch installed at entry points. It is also called a walk-through metal detector (WTMD), security arch, or metal detector gate.

A DFMD works on the principle of pulsed electromagnetic induction. A transmitter coil in one pillar generates a pulsed electromagnetic field. A receiver coil in the opposite pillar monitors this field continuously. When a metallic object passes through, it disrupts the field. The receiver coil detects this disruption and the control panel triggers an alarm and lights up the zone indicator showing where the metal was found.

DFMD prices in India in 2026 range from ₹15,000 for a basic 6-zone model to ₹1,20,000 for a professional 33-zone airport-grade system. The most commonly installed model for courts, hotels and malls — a 18-zone professional DFMD — costs ₹45,000 to ₹75,000 including installation. Contact Raise Solutions on +91 94926 67817 for a site-specific quote.

The main parts of a DFMD are: transmitter coil (generates the EM field), receiver coil (detects disturbances), control panel (processes signals and triggers alarm), LED zone indicator (shows which body zone has metal), audible alarm/buzzer, counter display, power supply unit, top crossbar connecting the two pillars, and base/feet that stabilise the arch on the floor.

A DFMD uses only electromagnetic induction — no X-rays or ionising radiation. It is completely safe for pregnant women and children. People with pacemakers should inform security personnel before walking through, as a precaution, since some older pacemaker models may be sensitive to strong electromagnetic fields. People with metal implants (hip replacements, plates, screws) can walk through without any health risk, though the DFMD will alarm due to the implant.

DFMD (Door Frame Metal Detector) is the walk-through arch — the person walks through it for primary screening. HHMD (Hand-Held Metal Detector) is the wand that a security officer uses to scan specific areas of the body for secondary screening after a DFMD alarm. Both devices work on electromagnetic induction. DFMD handles high throughput; HHMD pinpoints the exact location of metal. They are always used together at a complete security checkpoint.

Entry-level DFMDs have 6 zones — dividing the body into 6 horizontal bands. Professional models have 18 zones (most popular for courts and hotels). High-security airport-grade models have 33 zones. More zones means more precise location of metal — a 33-zone DFMD can tell you whether the metal is at the left ankle or right ankle, shoulder or chest. For standard commercial and institutional use, an 18-zone model is the recommended minimum.

Yes. Raise Solutions supplies and installs the complete security checkpoint — DFMD for person screening, HHMD for secondary checks, and X-ray baggage scanner for bag screening — as a single integrated system under one AMC contract. This is the recommended setup for courts, hotels, hospitals and government offices. Call +91 94926 67817 for a complete checkpoint quotation.
